What to Do If Your MacBook Won't Turn On

A MacBook that won't power on is alarming, but it's often a simple fix. Before you assume the worst, work through these steps.
1. Check the Charger and Port
Try a different USB-C or MagSafe charger and a different outlet. A faulty charger or a clogged charging port is the most common cause of a "dead" MacBook.
2. Reset the SMC
The System Management Controller handles power functions. On Intel MacBooks, a SMC reset can revive a machine that won't wake. On Apple Silicon Macs, a simple 10-second forced restart often does the trick.
3. Look for Signs of Life
Does the sleep indicator pulse? Do you hear a fan? If the screen stays black but the MacBook is running, you may have a display issue rather than a power issue.
4. Watch for Battery Swelling
If the trackpad clicks feel stiff or the case is bulging, the battery may be swollen — a safety issue. Stop using it and bring it in immediately.
5. When to Bring It In
If none of the above works, it could be a failed logic board, dead battery, or damaged flex cable. Bring your MacBook to TechPoint LLC in Casper for a free diagnostic — we'll tell you exactly what's wrong before any work begins.
